You wake up and decide that you want a change in your life. You decide that this is the day that you will go and take that first step. You go outside and you look around. There are about a hundred different gyms and studios on a hundred different streets around your neighborhood alone that you pass by every day on your way to work or to run your errands. In each of those gyms, they have several trainers that come in all different shapes, sizes, ethnicities, cultures and educational backgrounds and because of this, it can be hard to tell off appearances who would be the best suited to help you reach your goals. You may think:

Should I hire someone that looks like my goal?

How many people have they trained in their career?

Are their looks a direct reflection of their work ethic with clients?

What does this trainer's clients look like?

These perfectly legitimate concerns cannot be answered in just a quick how do you do? So how can you tell whether a trainer is a terrific trainer? Here are some quick indicators on how you can tell the difference.

Terrific Trainer Qualities

Patient, Positive, and Professional

Trainers who are terrific trainers understand that everyone is unique and as a result, everyone learns uniquely. These types of trainers have excellent verbal cues, can perform demonstrations of their exercise programs, and can keep good energy by refraining from becoming short, rolling their eyes or becoming aggressive or disrespectful (verbally or physically) whenever there may be a misunderstanding. These trainers are always on time, have a great track record with clients and co-workers, and are focused on your journey alone, not how it makes them look so how fit they are is not a great resource when it comes to evaluating terrific trainers. Asking clients is a good way to weed out the good ones from the terrific ones.

Certified, Knowledgeable and Humble

Trainers who are terrific trainers take the time to be formally educated on the structure of the body and its movements and understand that the need for education is key. Terrific trainers know that science is everchanging and they will never reach to a point where they will know everything there is to know about fitness so they stay educated by training with other trainers, taking regular seminars and trainings in sales and taking specialization in training special populations such as post and prenatal training, physical therapy, and training senior citizens. Terrific trainers will never throw in your face that their looks are an indicator of their knowledge or that they know everything. Terrific trainers understand the value of money and will take your trainings seriously and will work with you to make the most of your dollar.

Terrific trainers are attentive to you and your needs, so their focus is solely on you. Terrific trainers are not buried in their cell phones, wandering around or staring at themselves in a mirror while interacting with others. Watching them on the gym floor training others and asking their supervisors and co-workers are a great way to gauge terrific trainers.
